Lifesaving Poems has arrived

Well, it has finally arrived.

The anthology which began life as a blog, which began life as a notebook, is now here. In my hand. On my desk. In beautiful black and white. An object. With pages that turn, not a hyperlink in sight.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who has commented on my Lifesaving Poems blog posts since I started writing them, for their kind encouragement, wisdom and insight. I am also grateful to everyone who has emailed or messaged me privately to say how much certain poems or blog posts have meant to them, and how pleased they are that this project is happening.

You know who you are. Again, thank you.

I would also like to thank Neil Astley of Bloodaxe Books for proposing the project almost two years ago. I think I am still pinching myself.

As I say in my introduction to the book, Lifesaving Poems is my way of saying thank you to poetry: for not deserting me when I needed it; to the teachers, friends and poets who have shared it with me; and for the life it brings to my heart, without which life would be unimaginable. Again, thank you.

Readers of my blog will notice that I am once again beginning to add to the list of Lifesaving Poems with some new blog posts. Even though I am biased, I can tell you there are some real crackers on their way.

With thanks and good wishes to everyone who has supported me, and for your continued words of kindness and encouragement. They mean more than I can say.

As ever with good wishes,

Anthony

  1. I’m so pleased – tomorrow I’ll be able to say that ‘Lifesaving Poems’ has arrived. I’m afraid I’ve ordered it from Amazon.co.uk but you did mention it and it is cheaper and it is free next day delivery….. Can’t wait!

  2. My copy arrived from the Guardian Bookshop on Wednesday. I shall be quoting from it this evening at a ‘Loyal Variety Show’ – a fundraiser for Hospiscare in the new College Surgery in Cullompton. Congratulations on both your choices and your commentaries: most illuminating.

  3. I received my copy of Life Saving Poems last Saturday. What joy to spend a lazy Sunday morning dipping in. Many poems and posts I remember from following your blog these last years, and more new discoveries than I expected! It’s a satisfyingly full volume with loads of great poems. Most of all I love your gentle, enthusiastic, authentic voice companioning each one with engaging stories and insights. Wonderful and well done. (I think I will need a signed copy though.)
    Warmly, Rionach
P.S. I’d love to interview you about it for my online series, Poetry Alchemy for Our Times, if you have time.

  5. Got it midday, reading now. I was so glad that it includes your comments as well as the poems – I didn’t know. It means that I can and will read it from beginning to end, not just randomly like a usual anthology. And I know I can trust your choices. Thank you.
